Job Summary
Under general supervision, to perform all necessary work required for the preparation, maintenance and operation of stage lighting, stage grid and rigging; for the operation and maintenance of arena sound and lighting systems; for the set-up and moving of temporary show equipment brought to the State Farm Center; for the installation and removal of theatrical scenery and house curtains within the fabric stagehouse, and related duties in support of athletic facilities as needed.
Duties & Responsibilities Audio Systems o Put into position, before or during any public event, the microphones designated and select the proper types of microphones for specific purposes.
o Maintain and operate the State Farm Center, and other athletic facilities as needed, sound systems, patch panel, control panel, amplifiers and speakers.
o Maintain, install and operate sound recording equipment.
Stage/Event Equipment o Perform such technical specialties as the splicing of cables and ropes, the use of stageweights and stage braces, the maintenance and the correct use of tie lines, the maintenance and repair of curtains, and the periodic inspection of curtains in storage to prevent damage.
o Operate the grid control panel and telemetering device.
o Install and remove stage properties, house curtains within the fabric stagehouse, and scenery.
o Construct, maintain, repair and install stage equipment such as podiums, risers, staging, etc.
Stage lighting/Event Lighting systems o Cut, install, change and maintain inventories of lighting gelatins.
o Focus the X-ray lights, eyeball lights, front lights, spotlights and special lights for general and specific uses.
o Install special purpose lights on battens and connect them to the electrical system.
o Re-lamp those lighting systems which are on dimmers and maintain both usage records and inventories of special varieties of lamps required there.
o Maintain, operate and relocate all types of spotlights.
o Maintain and operate stage batten lights and the allies control panels.
Rigging o Perform all work required to maintain the safety, trim and proper rigging of the State Farm Center, and other athletic facilities as needed, grid systems, battens and winched cables.
o Take all precautions to insure safe operation of equipment in the theater grid and other elevated places; be alert to the continuing danger inherent to the catwalks, grid and light platforms; and help prevent access thereto of unauthorized persons.
o Open and close traveler curtains.
Other duties o Maintain, install and operate projection equipment.
o Perform assigned functions in connection with closed-circuit television at the State Farm Center and other athletic facilities as needed.
o Perform related duties as assigned.

Position involves grasping and manipulating objects including the use of small, precise movements.
Position may be involved in unloading or loading trucks containing heavy equipment.
Working Conditions: Work hours are extremely varied and are not of a shift nature.
Position may be required to work any 8-hour period around the clock.
Much of the work is conducted at night and on weekends.
Duties are varied and no two days are alike.
The position may be required to work overtime on short notice.
Work on gridline is hazardous and requires safety equipment and alert attitude at all times.
Position involves working at great heights.
Minimum Qualifications 1.
High school diploma or equivalent.
2.
Two (2) years (24 months) of professional experience working with stage equipment, public address or sound reinforcing systems, and/or lighting for live-theater purposes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of electricity and electronic theories, sound system operation and maintenance procedures, theatrical lighting system operation and maintenance procedures, and terminology and principles pertinent to electric, electronic, sound, and light equipment.
Knowledge of stage scenery, illumination, and properties; familiarity with equipment and materials pertaining thereto.
Knowledge of stage rigging procedures.
Knowledge of and compliance with, specific NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and institution rules that relate to this position.
Working knowledge of stagecraft.
Ability to operate and maintain sound and lighting equipment appropriate to the professional presentation of live-theater productions, addresses, concerts, and similar programs.
Ability to work as directed and to follow instructions.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3298 - Assembly Hall Stagehand position, appointed on a 12-month basis.
The expected start date is as soon as possible after 1/29/2024.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
