Job Summary
Plan and create digital and physical content for the Division of Public Safety's multiple constituencies to inform the community about police activities, public safety issues, safety resources and crime prevention strategies.
Duties & Responsibilities Content Production Serve as a writer and content creator for all Division platforms, including social media, website, digital signage, newsletters, printed materials, and other promotional materials as needed.
Proactively identify photo and video opportunities, and attend those events to collect visual content for immediate or future use.
Identify issues of potential community interest and generate content to inform the community.
Identify methods to advertise Division resources and events.
Engage other members of the Division of Public Safety in order to maintain a working knowledge of all areas within the Division and to encourage participation in communication opportunities.
Assist with content production and editing for the Division of Public Safety website, including maintenance of the website in the absence of the Chief of Staff.
Ensure all communications and social media presentation complies with university branding standards and is consistent with university and Division values.
Monitor social media platforms to identify potential public safety-related issues and ensure a timely response to trending issues or inbound messages.
Work with social media partners across campus to collaborate and cross-promote.
Attend outreach events to engage audiences and learn about the needs of stakeholders.
Content Planning and Evaluation In coordination with the Chief of Staff, develop long-term communications strategies and plans to ensure consistent delivery of content that is relevant to campus community needs.
Cultivate new audiences to ensure that all stakeholders are engaged.
Develop metrics to measure the success and effectiveness of the Division’s communication initiatives.
Produce and analyze regular reports showing the performance of the Division’s communication tactics.
Assist with communications annual planning and priority setting in coordination with Division leadership.
Advise Division leadership on areas of community concern and make recommendations on how to meet those needs.
Branding In coordination with the Chief of Staff, maintain a consistent voice and visual identity for all Division of Public Safety communications.
Establish community trust and engagement by delivering transparent and timely information that accurately reflects the mission and values of the Division of Public Safety.
Additional Physical Demands 1.
Physical Requirements The position requires reliability of service.
Position requires use of a computer terminal, dial a phone, digital camera, video recorder, audio recorders, and tripods.
Potential to stand for long periods of time, walking for long periods, bending/stooping under objects.

Work Environment Work is performed primarily in an office setting although on-site visits to events and sponsors are required.
Travel Requirements 10% Traveling to take pictures as needed.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, or a related field.
One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in public relations, journalism, social media communications, newspaper reporting, radio/television broadcasting with emphasis on production, or web/digital media.
Demonstrated experience in public safety communications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong writing and editing skills Knowledge of the methods and conventions of journalism Ability to work under a tight deadline Ability to exercise excellent judgment and discretion when handling of confidential and/or sensitive issues.
Broad, general knowledge of higher education Understanding of the Urbana-Champaign campus academic and administrative structure Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5006 - Public Information Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis.
The expected start date is as soon as possible after 3/1/2024.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
