The Marketing and Communications team at the University of Illinois’ Gies College of Business acts as an in-house marketing agency.

As Assistant Director of Website Strategy, you'll be at the forefront of this effort, working closely with units throughout the College to understand their objectives and translate them into effective marketing strategies.
Job Summary The Assistant Director of Website Strategy has overall responsibility for Gies web channels including the main, online programs, intranet for faculty and staff, and current student sites.
This position works closely with leadership and team leads to ensure sites support college strategic priorities.
In this role you'll collaborate across the marketing and communications team with designers, writers, digital marketers, videographers, and project managers to create a highly effected web presence for the college.
Duties & Responsibilities Planning and Strategy - In collaboration with marketing and communications leadership and team leads, set overall strategy for Gies websites.
This includes maintaining a global view of Gies web channels and ensuring overall quality and effectiveness.
- Work with writers and content developers to set content strategy and ensure creation and execution of an editorial calendar and update schedule.
- Work with director of brand engagement and creative team to ensure all websites are on-brand; work with outside designers when necessary.
- Collaborate with director of insights and strategy to collect and process data and other information for the website, conduct in-depth research and analysis to understand user behavior, and monitor competitor landscape.
Share information with team leads and oversee implementation of data-driven improvements to sites.
- Lead SEO work including relationship with outside vendors, when necessary.
Mobilize the team in support of SEO improvements.
- Ensure user interface is aligned with current trends and industry standards.
Facilitate adjustments to structure, navigation, and design when warranted based on research, data, and changing business needs.
- Ensure that key stakeholder perspectives are represented appropriately across websites.
- Collaborate with other colleges and campus web managers and represent Gies on committees and in meetings.
Management - Manage website content specialist and other professional staff.
- Implement and oversee workflow process for website edits, additions, and changes.
- Proactively manage regular content updates to the site including images, statistics, and time-sensitive information.
- Collaborate with college information technology team for back-end development and maintenance of sites.
- Manage a group of unit web liaisons to gather input on effectiveness of websites.
- Monitor and follow best practices for websites.
- Work within and contribute to team project management systems.
- Other marketing and communications duties as assigned.
Specialty Factors Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.
Five (5) years (60 months) of professional work experience in marketing, public relations, communications, brand management, or a related professional area.
Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.
Demonstrated experience managing websites.
Preferred Qualifications - Previous experience working in higher education.
- Basic understanding of principles of good website user interface.
- Strong understanding of SEO.
- Previous experience with content management systems.
- Familiarity with Google Analytics and how to use them to strengthen website effectiveness.
- Previous experience managing others.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of marketing and communications strategies and principles.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize, multitask and work in a team environment as well as work independently.
A passion for education and a genuine interest in promoting the College’s mission.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with designers, writers, videographers, and other marketing positions.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage projects.
Superb interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to foster positive relationships and facilitate collaboration.
Familiarity with accessibility requirements.
Strong writing and editing skills.
Basic understanding of graphic design principles.
Ability to manage strategy discussions and develop marketing plans.
Ability to use research findings and analytics in decision making Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5004 - Marketing Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis.
The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search.
Salary will be commensurate with experience, with the base salary starting at $65,000.
This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with the ratio of in-office and work-from-home days to be determined by the supervisor.
