The Office of Marketing & Communications in The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a Communications Coordinator position.
The Communications Coordinator primarily focuses on providing writing support and coordination of communications activities in service of college-wide goals and unit-specific needs.
This position is responsible for developing compelling stories, and covering research and accomplishments for external audiences, as well as informational content for internal audiences of Grainger Engineering and its programs.
Duties and Responsibilities: Strategic Communications: Identify, develop and distribute news happening across Grainger Engineering, including actively seeking out, interviewing, and writing feature stories about faculty, students, staff and alumni.
As assigned, develop news releases and announcements about research being produced across the Grainger Engineering research enterprise for campus and external audiences via print and digital channels.
Research, organize, draft and edit written content, including but not limited to, print publications, emails and e-newsletters, websites, social media, news releases, media kits and talking points.
Write assigned content for marketing communications channels including unit-specific websites, intranet, e-newsletters, print publications, print or digital building displays and wayfinding, and other materials.
Work with campus and external partners to coordinate amplification of shared news items.
Work collaboratively with the OMC team to coordinate external communications with internal communications to best leverage assets and messaging.
Media Relations: Identify opportunities and pitch ideas that assist OMC team with increasing media exposure on the achievements of college-wide faculty, students, staff and alumni.
Other Duties: Align communications with Grainger Engineering and University of Illinois brand and marketing strategies and guidelines.
Build and maintain strong relationships with faculty, students, and staff across the relevant IRUs, research centers, programs and departments.
Represent Grainger Engineering communications on college and campus committees as requested.
Assume additional duties related to communications to further the Grainger Engineering mission and strategic priorities.
Stay informed of emerging topics, trends and strategies relevant to Grainger Engineering audiences.
Supervise student workers including delegating work, reviewing completed tasks, developing strategies for and providing guidance to student workers.
Guide projects from start to finish using project management tools.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, or a related field.
Two years of related professional communications and marketing experience.
Demonstrated experience and ability to translate complex ideas into language understandable by a wide audience.
Demonstrated experience in marketing via print and electronic media.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated experience researching, shaping and drafting news stories and feature articles.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Mastery of grammar, punctuation and spelling; a high-degree of attention to detail; and error-free clear, effective language is expected.
A working knowledge of the AP Style Guide is expected.
Must be detailed oriented, have excellent organizational skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently and exercise good judgement.
Ability to analyze and derive insight from data to inform decisions.
Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse, high-paced, team-based environment.
Ability to work on many projects simultaneously, under a deadline, and be able to function effectively under pressure with frequent interruptions and/or direction changes.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION This is a full-time Civil Service Public Information Associate position appointed on a 12-month service basis.
The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
The minimum salary is $55,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Hybrid work options may be available for this position, with the ability to be on-site as needed.
Work authorization is not available for this position.
