The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement (OVCIA) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign seeks a full-time Associate Vice Chancellor for Advancement, Health Sciences.
The Associate Vice Chancellor (AVC) will be an innovative, collegial, and highly motivated fundraising leader with a strong sense of urgency and commitment to our institutional values and a growing health sciences ecosystem.
The ideal candidate must demonstrate superb skills and success in donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship at principal gift levels; significant experience managing large and multi-functional teams and programs within a complex and decentralized advancement structure; a record of developing and implementing effective fundraising and engagement strategies with a variety of constituents; and excellent communication and listening skills.
The AVC will serve as a unifying force for the organization and excel at working in a collaborative, team-based environment, while simultaneously establishing and meeting clear expectations of accountability.

Developing a robust health and medical fundraising program will be critical towards fulfilling the University’s Boldly Illinois strategic plan and future campaign goals.
Organizational Relationships As a member of the OVCIA executive leadership team, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Advancement, Health Sciences, reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Advancement and will work closely with respective colleges/unit leadership to maximize fundraising success and engagement by building strong internal partnerships with respective deans, directors, and advancement personnel.
Moreover, serving as the University’s central philanthropic advisor for health sciences, they will help guide university leadership, in conjunction with the Office of Principal gifts, with engagement efforts for the institutions highest-level donors and act as an equally strong external spokesperson with campus partners and our broader university communities.
The successful candidate must also be prepared to position the University to respond to the evolving nature of philanthropy, and further engage the institution’s non-alumni donor populations.

Duties & Responsibilities It is expected that the Associate Vice Chancellor for Advancement will: Serve as a strategic advisor and key collaborator to the Dean and Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) of assigned colleges to build advancement programs in support of university-wide and college priorities.
Conduct strategic assessments of existing philanthropic strengths and opportunities within the assigned colleges.
Partner closely with Deans, Chief Advancement Officers, executive officers, and administrators to establish ambitious immediate and long-term fundraising goals.
In partnership with the Vice Chancellor for Advancement and the OVCIA leadership team, establish standards for CAO and gift officer performance and clearly communicate expectations to foster a culture with a high level of accountability.
Incorporate and operationalize best practices to ensure institution-wide consistency among major gift officers.
Collaborate with other advancement officers across campus to devise strategies for interdisciplinary, transformative opportunities, including all aspects of donor cultivation and stewardship.
Determine appropriate use of central financial resources for assigned colleges, including budgeting of travel funds and programmatic support.
In conjunction and partnership with deans and CAO’s, lead performance and portfolio management efforts for respective colleges/units, and establish metrics and goals for fundraising and related activities.
Provide access to training and mentorship for gift officers in respect to meeting stated goals.
Support and amplify central initiatives led by other members of the OVCIA leadership team, including Strategic Engagement, Talent Management, and Principal Gifts.
Manage a small portfolio of leadership and principal gift donors and prospects.
Assist in the management of the Vice Chancellor for Advancement’s portfolio and assist in the staffing of the Chancellor.

Within 3 months, you will: Become familiar with the strategic vision and priorities of the Health Sciences programs and initiatives across campus Begin to meet and build positive relationships with your direct reports and as well as with leadership and peers in Advancement Assess the structure, resources, capabilities, and bandwidth of your advancement teams as well as individual and collective progress to goals Become familiar with the overarching structure of Illinois Advancement and the alignment between OVCIA, the University of Illinois Foundation, and the University of Illinois Alumni Association Attend professional development and networking activities for newcomers within Advancement Meet your units’ Prospect Development Analysts and begin to dig into your team’s portfolios as well as your own Within 6 months, you will: Begin cultivating relationships with key college/unit faculty, staff, and constituents in an effort to support and enhance solicitation strategies Partner with stewardship and donor relations, events, alumni relations, and communications colleagues on unit/college-wide initiatives and funding priorities Be able to share multiple meaningful impact stories of transformative gifts By the end of the first year, you will: Continue to develop and enhance a trusting and collaborative team culture Cooperatively set annual performance goals/metrics with your staff, portfolio management team, and Performance Management Partner with Talent Management and Performance Management teams for individual and team coaching, professional development, retreat, and goal-setting opportunities Build a robust network of colleagues across campus Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required.
At least twelve years of health-related advancement experience, including working in an environment integrating development, constituent engagement, communications, and stewardship.
At least five years of progressively responsible management experience, including the successful mentoring and motivating of staff to produce successful outcomes.
Experience and strong record of successfully engaging non-alumni donor populations.
Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree preferred.
Leadership experience in a comprehensive campaign at a large research university or a similarly complex non-profit institution.
Familiarity with Blackbaud CRM as well as Plus Delta curriculum.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities The ability to speak and write persuasively, listen effectively, and engage in meaningful partnerships with both internal and external constituencies A commitment to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within advancement and across the University.
Exceptional interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to interact effectively with academic leaders, faculty, staff, donors, and volunteers to produce outcomes.
The ability to travel on a regular basis throughout the United States with a possibility of occasional international travel.
Be prepared to position the University to respond to the evolving nature of both academic medicine and clinical practice philanthropy.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis.
The expected start date is as soon as possible after close date.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
The target salary for this position is mid-$200k.
