Technology Manager - Hybrid OTM Urbana-Champaign Posting Category: Technology Managers are licensing professionals who provide the highest quality licensing strategy and outreach to industry and others interested in commercializing University owned technology.
Technology Managers also negotiate business terms, develop license agreements, and manage ongoing licensee relationships on behalf of the University.
Senior Technology Managers will have a deep understanding of the technology's developmental and marketing needs, the IP strategy, and will develop and maintain productive relationships with faculty inventors and corporate representatives to build a pipeline of disclosures and licenses.
Duties and Responsibilities Develop and manage strong relationships with student, post-doc and faculty inventors as well as prospective inventors with a focus in the physical sciences, including civil, mechanical, nuclear, electrical and computer engineering, bioengineering, and/or biomedical imaging.
Disseminate and promote the Unit's mission and information on provided services among colleges, departments, institutes, and other units on campus.
Provide general advice and counsel on technology commercialization including disclosing inventions, screening and evaluation, intellectual property, licensing, and so forth.
Evaluate and screen disclosures; independently and collaboratively license technologies involving (a) identifying and qualifying licensees, including startup companies, (b) developing marketing strategies and plans, (c) drafting business terms for license agreements, (d) negotiating and executing routine and complex license agreements, material transfer agreements, and other standard agreements; manage executed agreements.
Manage a standard portfolio of technologies.
Independently and collaboratively develop and execute marketing strategies and plans; develop, maintain, and enhance industry relationships, promote technology associated sponsored research relationships.
Develop and deliver annual Action Plan to maintain effective relationships with inventors in order to grow the disclosure pipeline and with licensees in order to market technologies and develop the license pipeline.
Develop an annual Professional Development and Improvement Plan.
Actively plan and participate in conferences and seminars conducted by the University, Unit, or professional organizations.
Represent the Unit at a variety of meetings involving International, National, University, State and local government officials and Industry representatives.
Train and mentor Associate Technology Managers, Commercialization Analysts, and other support staff as needed.
Lead, organize, and serve on working groups to improve the Unit's processes.
When required, serve on search committees for open positions within the Unit.
Collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Programs to negotiate intellectual property terms in certain grants and sponsored research agreements.
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in physical science, imaging, engineering, or related field; and Any one of the following: Master's degree in physical science, engineering, imaging, or a related field.
PhD in physical science, engineering, imaging, or a related field.

or equivalent degree.
Credentials to practice before the USPTO (e.
g.
, registered patent agent or registered patent attorney).
Three years of experience in industry, entrepreneurship, legal, licensing, technology transfer, or related roles.
Seven years of experience in industry, entrepreneurship, legal, licensing, technology transfer, or related roles.
Preferred: At least two of the attributes in the Education Required section above or at least five of the attributes listed in the Education Required section above to be considered for Senior Technology Manager position.
Knowledge and Experience: Preferred: Relevant professional experience in business, academic, or government including licensing of technologies.
Technical background in a research area aligned with the technology portfolio (licensing and technology marketing or related experience may be considered in lieu of advanced degree requirement and technical requirement).
Strong working knowledge of intellectual property law and industry-standard licenses including royalty rates and license structures.
Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and discretion.
Demonstrated teamwork skills in a highly complex business environment.
Exceptional verbal and written communications skills.
Ability to manage confidential information.
Good decision-making and negotiating skills.
Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to maintain strong relationships with faculty inventors and prospective inventors.
Ability to develop and maintain strong industry client relationships.
