us as a PILI Summer Fellow in our Central Regional Office (East St.
Louis), Eastern
Regional Office (Champaign) , Western Regional Office (Alton), or Southern Regional
Office (Carbondale).
Land of Lincoln Legal Aid provides free civil legal services to low-income
individuals in 65 counties in Illinois.
We are committed to working for justice with those whose voices
might otherwise not be heard; to assist individuals in advocating for themselves; and to make positive
changes in collaboration with the communities we serve.
Our attorneys provide holistic legal advocacy
in partnership with community organizations, social service agencies, and faith-based groups.
The law student fellow will assist clients in a variety of substantive areas of law that may include: tenant
rights and eviction, sealing and expungement, public benefits, consumer, family law, domestic violence
prevention, and foreclosure defense.
The fellow may also work with community partners and perform
outreach.
Responsibilities may include:
• Interview clients and follow up with them by email and telephone
• Draft pleadings, letters, and memorandums of law
• Conduct legal research, investigations, and collect evidence
• Attend court and administrative hearings; if licensed pursuant to Rule 711, may represent clients
and engage in negotiation under attorney supervision
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• Completed 1L or 2L year of law school
• Strong commitment to social and racial justice
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work with people of diverse social, economic,
and racial/ethnic backgrounds
• Ability to communicate with diverse audiences
• Excellent verbal, analytical, writing and organization skills
• Highly motivated, with a strong attention to detail
Special Working Conditions and Demands:
• Applicants must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and car insurance.
• Applicants must have regular access to a computer and internet.
Compensation:
$6500 for 400 hours of work over the summer
