Engagement Coordinator - Japan House

Job Summary
This position will be to serve as a direct connection between Japan House's course offerings and public-facing cultural study experiences.
This position will largely be focused on further developing and strengthening both academic and culturally immersive opportunities surrounding chadō (the Japanese Way of Tea) and other traditional Japanese art forms such as: kimono dressing, wagashi (Japanese tea sweets) making, Japanese culinary arts, ikebana, Japanese landscape and others in tandem with Japan House's founding ideals.
Duties & Responsibilities ENGAGEMENT · Develop and strengthen relationships between Japan House and organizations and businesses that are Japanese-based, Japanese-American-based, and also with other Asian cultural businesses and organizations — locally, nationally, and internationally.
· Cultivate relationships with practitioners, artisans and craftspeople who are trained in traditional Japanese arts and cultural studies to collaborate with for programming and teaching opportunities.
· Serve as a direct liaison between Japan House, University departments, the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Urbana-Champaign Association, the Urasenke Foundation in Kyoto, Japan, the office of the Consulate-General Office of Japan in Chicago, the Japan Information Center of Chicago, other Chicago based Japanese organizations, and Japanese alumni groups and universities related to Japan House programming.
o Further developing these relationships and stewarding them will help Japan House to better establish a broader recognition at the state, national and ultimately international levels.
ACADEMICS · In collaboration with other members of Japan House’s team, increase and further expand upon University and community-based studies of and interactions with chado and other traditional Japanese art forms through course development to include: o Development of introductory courses that will fulfill prerequisite requirements for advanced ARTJ courses.
o Development of advanced ARTJ capstone courses that provide students deeper exposure to initial class offerings.
o Examination and establishment of course offerings that may be specifically proposed to Parkland Pathways students.
o Establishment of introductory programming or course for incoming freshmen to be exposed to Japan House related courses, the Japanese Aesthetics Minor, and general programming.
o Collaborate and engage with study abroad programs by offering preparatory workshops, etiquette courses, and cultural programming to better prepare students traveling to Japan.
· Coordinate and connect the Japan House Internship Program to University-based organizations and also other departments such as East Asian Languages and Cultures and Global Studies.
PROGRAMMING AND OFFICE RESPONSIBILITIES · Assist with the production and preparation of materials for traditional Japanese arts and aesthetics-related events, including wagashi (Japanese tea sweets) for tea ceremonies.
· Collaborate with the Education and Engagement Specialist to develop grant proposals and opportunities to foster relationships and create cultural programming for community-based organizations and/or K-12 academic institutions.
· Develop and administer programs and projects under the direction of the Director and with the assistance of other staff members to expand outreach opportunities into the community.
· Work collaboratively with Japan House staff, volunteers, and local community to achieve Japan House’s mission and goals.
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED Required Bachelor’s degree.
A total of two (2) years (24 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the Urasenke School style of the Way of Tea (Note: Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.
) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Japanese language skills (minimum of 2 years of University level studies) Exposure to and understanding of Japanese traditional arts such as wagshi making, ikebana, kimono, and other such traditional arts.
Demonstrated effective communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively with others.
Excellent writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills Ability to work harmoniously with faculty, staff, and students from a wide variety of disciplines, and with representatives from national and international institutions.
Awareness of, and sensitivity to, cultural differences.
Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Sensitivity to the functioning of an interdisciplinary program within the context of a complex university.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with University students, broader community, including K-12 communities.
Project coordination and proven organizational talents.
Ability to assume responsibility and to work independently with minimum guidance, Initiative and creativity in program development.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5002 - Program Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis.
The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close of the search.
Minimum salary for this position is $42,000.
